President's Day Ski Adventure

Riley, Jacob & Richard

Riley & Dalton

Richard & Jacob

Merrill had to work at Park City on President's day so I thought it would be fun to take the kids skiing since they didn't have school. I told Richard he could bring a friend for his birthday because he didn't have a party this year, so he invited his friend Jacob. Jacob is a really nice friend and they get along really well but Jacob as it turns out does not know how to ski. Driving up to Park City about half way between Provo and Heber, Jacob tells me he thinks he's going to throw up. I frantically hand him a garbage sack and he threw up in it not once but twice. I found out he gets car sick, and the poor kid was in the back seat between the boys. Maybe I should have turned back then but no, I don't know a sign when it hits me between the eyes. My kids ski better than I do, so teaching Jacob how to ski was so far out of my comfort zone. In fact I had ski instructors ski by and tell me to put him in a lesson. By the end of the day Jacob was skiing pretty well and Merrill was impressed that I had taught him to ski. Actually Richard and I switched off with him and Jacob decided Richard was a better teacher. My friend Melanie was up there with her kids and after we hooked up with them it was a lot more fun for Riley as he had spent all day with Lindsay waiting at the bottom of the lift for us to make it down. I'd ski up to see them laying in the snow looking so bored. Melanie's son Dalton & Riley used to play together when they lived here so it was fun for them to ski together even though they really don't remember playing together. It was a long day and my legs still hurt from helping him up all day, but in the end the kids had a fun time. I had an adventure!

What a good mom -- and teacher! That could have been a rough day for little Jacob and all of you, but it sounds like you all handled it perfectly.
